Sun, songs and The Big Gig - Love Kingston Day 2016

The sun came out for Love Kingston Day 2016, with residents, businesses, schools, choirs, pubs and banks holding fundraising events to raise vital funds for local causes that support vulnerable residents in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.

A weekend of Valentines specials at the Canbury Arms and Wych Elm, face-painting and games for children at Eden Walk Shopping Centre Walk, bake sales, Neighbourly Nosh dinners, raffles, mufti days and the first ever all-day music gig were some of the activities that saw residents, customers and crowds getting involved in their community.

Love Kingston Day, coinciding with Valentine’s Day on 14 February, is an annual fundraising initiative of Love Kingston. Money raised from the event will be given in grants to projects tackling isolation and encouraging integration across the borough and help to build a fund that will support charitable activity for generations to come. With the range of activities, and events continuing into March, donations are still coming in and the full amount raised will be announced in a few weeks’ time.

Charlotte Salaman, The Canbury Arms and The Wych Elm owner

“Michael and I were delighted to support Love Kingston, our third year of involvement. Our customers were so receptive to the initiatives we organised over the entire weekend, not only 14th February but also the 12th and 13th. We donated a £1 from every ‘special’ sold at each of our pubs, a ‘lucky dip,’ which we personally donated food and drink prizes worth over £1000, and together with our wine supplier Charlotte Dean of Wined Up Here in Norbiton who also kindly donated vouchers, we raised an amazing total of £661.00.

Our community is very special to us and to be able to offer a helping hand to those locally who are less fortunate is something we feel very strongly about; we are grateful that our customers showed similar enthusiasm for Love Kingston - without their support we couldn’t have contributed so much”.

James Giles, 16, Love Kingston’s youngest ambassador and editor of Coombe Monthly

"We had a great day fundraising in Eden Walk: from promoting South West London Question Time to a tombola and education activities from Kingston University, a variety of activities saw funds being raised for excellent causes in our glorious royal borough. It is important to back good causes in our local community who support those who need it most – who knows when you might be in need of that help?"

Tessa Kind, Love Kingston Ambassador and organiser of The Big Gig

“The Big Gig turned out to be not only a fundraiser for Love Kingston Day but an incredible showcase for some of the home-grown bands and singer/songwriters in the borough. A huge thank you to ValvePower, Chuck Sinatra, Olivia Scarlett, Pete Peachy, Nutloaf, Disinclined, SKB and One World and to door staff, kit lenders, raffle donors, publicists, drivers, the Fighting Cocks team and everyone for turning up to support the day.”

Sorrel Parsons, Love Kingston Fund Manager

“This has been a heart-warming weekend with residents and businesses showing just how much they love this special borough and the small local community groups that are the lifeblood of our community. It’s been amazing to see the diversity of activities, from pub specials to the first all day gig.

Every penny raised will help projects reach residents across the borough that are isolated from both people and place, whether through loss of loved ones, language barriers, frailty, mental health problems and other tough challenges. Donations will also help to build a fund to secure a sustainable future for charities and community groups in the borough”.
